RE: Winter Towing

Check the weather forecasts, weather radar etc. just prior to your departure. Either route can be tricky that time of year and you may find yourself heading south on the western route and back home on the eastern route. Eastern route tends to be less busy, fewer big rigs, but there are also fewer services along the highway and greater fuel stop planning may be in order. Chevy guy eh! Where in S Ontario are you? Winter Towing

We live in southern Ontario and next March we are going down to Florida for a couple of weeks. I have never towed my 27' TT in the winter before and I am a little concerned. Normally the route we take goes through Pennsylvania and the Virginias which is quite hilly. In March there is a good chance that we won't hit bad weather but then again... I am considering another route through Kentucky, Tenessee etc. which I understand is much flatter. In case I do run into bad weather, what can I do to make the trip safe and still enjoyable? I have my fingers crossed that winter will be over for the most part by then.

RE: The New Truck is a SMASHING Success!!

Yep, diesels were meant to work hard! I know it doesn't quite measure up to Canadas' best but how did you like Trail Ridge Road? Craig We had driven it last year on our way through to California so we got a little taste of it (I was more worried about getting to the top without any problems). This year we drove Trail Ridge twice and Old Falls River Road once (the dirt one way road). We loved both of them-the views are so amazing! I hope to get back there before too long.

The New Truck is a SMASHING Success!!

Just wanted to drop a line here because I got so much help from so many people when I was looking for a new TV this winter. Last summer we went on an 11,000 KM trip to California with a passenger van that totally sucked. We struggled up the hills (barely making it sometimes), nearly overheated on several occasions and rode the Nevada and southern Arizona deserts with our AC off, the windows open and the heater blasting- not very pleasant. This winter we bought a 2007 Chevy 2500 diesel and man- what a difference. We just completed a 4500 mile trip today out to Yellowstone and Estes Park and for the most part I put it in cruise at 60 MPH with Tow/Haul on and ripped through any hill we came across. I took it out of cruise for the big climbs but the truck did not hesitate. All of the above without the temp guage moving an inch! Other than diesel prices and an unexpained, unbelievably annoying rattle which I ended up fixing by stuffing heavy duty paper towels in my dash (leave it to GM for the fit and finish), I have nothing to complain about. This was the best TV purchase I have ever made! As a side bar, Yellowstone was amazing. We loved it there. It was also nice to enjoy Rocky Mountain National Park with our new truck. Thanks for the help in my choice this winter!!

RE: TAKE NOTE!! Jackson/Snake River KOA- Wyoming

Just a note to those who defend KOA's. We have stayed in MANY KOA's for one night stays as we travel. I have never expected much more than a parking lot (if you are lucky with a couple of trees) and so I am seldom terribly disappointed. In fact we have been pleasantly surprised at times (ie. Billings, Montana) but this is completely overboard. Just as a sidebar, besides the washrooms being absolutely pathetic in terms of shower privacy, we were advised by a neighbor that we should park our truck so that our gas cap is next to the trailer. It seems that last night some outsiders came in the camp and stole diesel right out of a few people's trucks!! I am not ready to throw KOA's out completely as they serve a very specific purpose...one night stays on the road. I will however check out the website mentioned by others in this thread before I book again. thanks for the input

TAKE NOTE!! Jackson/Snake River KOA- Wyoming

Just thought I would drop a line about the above KOA. I am presently sitting in my trailer at this park and I can tell you that I am really feeling like I have been ripped off. The sites are crammed together and of really poor quality. I was told on the phone that we would have a pull through "premier" site. Technically I wasn't lied to as I would have had a pull through if there had not been another trailer parked in the front half of my site (this is typical throughout the park). It appears that during slow times they use the sites as pull throughs and during busy times (like this weekend), they double everything up but just don't tell you that over the phone. If by premier you mean water, electricity and a sewer connection that is well above grade then I guess I got it. As an added kicker, we were charged $57 for one night PLUS $7 per child (total of $78)- well above normal KOA rates. I almost choked when I was quoted the price but I figured that since this was a "premier" site that I could suck it up for one night- I was sadly mistaken. The only thing that can be said is that it is about 10-15 minutes from downtown Jackson which is a very cool little town. That being said, I don't think that gives someone the right to charge ridiculous prices for completely sub-par facilities. I am going to complain to management however I have already been warned by other complaining Kampers that the owner is not at all receptive to critisism. I also plan to try and lodge a complaint with KOA headquarters. This is the 2nd KOA on this trip that has failed to meet the minimum standards promised by KOA. Sorry for the negative commentary but I thought that if others are headed out this way they may want to look for something else. Me and my very close new neighbors are very disappointed.

One More Tow/Haul Mode Question!!

I am getting ready for a trip out to Yellowstone this week and I have, in the process been reading up on tow/haul mode. I have a "new" Chevy 2500 diesel pickup. Everyone says to "set it and forget it" but I have a question- if I travel under 80KM/hour (I am in Canada)- about 50 MPH- the shifting seems too high and the RPM's are higher than I would like. Once I get up to speed on the highway- 60 to 65 MPH- it seems fine. Is this normal? Just wondering.

Yellowstone to Douglas

Hi everyone- we are heading out to Yellowstone later this week. I was wondering just how desolate the road was leading from the south entrance to the park to Douglas, Wyoming. We are leaving by this route. We have a new diesel TV and I was just thinking about the availability of fuel. Any comments?

Stick on Maps

Hi everyone- we are looking to get our hands on those stick on maps for our TT. The only issue is that we would like to get the solid colour type and the only ones we have seen at the major retailers etc. is the new fangled type which has different graphics on each state/province. Anybody know where you can get the solid coloured type?

Feeling "Light"

I have only just towed a very short distance with my new '07 Chevy Silverado 2500 diesel and existing 27' TT but I have been surprised how much I notice the trailer behind me. I have a proper set up with a sway bar and torsion bars but somehow the truck feels a little "light" in the front. Everything looks level. Any comment on how I might fix this? I am thinking that perhaps it is something I just need to get used to. Any comments?

RE: "Dangerous" Yellowstone Roads

thanks for the info...unfortunately we are coming in from the North/East entrance and going to Bay Bridge so I don't have much of a choice unless I want to go all the way around! Think I'll try this route...I am up for some adventure!

"Dangerous" Yellowstone Roads

I recently read that the portion of the Grand Loop between Tower-Roosevelt and Canyon Creek is not advisable for towing through with large RV or trailers. We have a 27' TT and diesel Chevy pickup. Any one pull through this area? Any comments. It doesn't say you shouldn't it just says that you may choose not to.

Acceptable Oil Pressure?

I have a 2007 Chevy Siverado diesel and I was just wondering...what should the oil pressure be at? Under normal circumstances I seem to be running at 200-300 KPa (Canadian guage). This is without towing. What about with towing- does it change? Never paid much attention to this but I recently thought my guage reading looked low after my last oil change.

RE: Fort Wilderness next week

Don't forget the bug spray. The one with the most deet works best. Also get a "after Bite" stick in case you get caught. It is a roll on stick that you apply directly to the bite. Works great. I am partially joking but sometimes I wonder if they spray for bugs there. We have been many times at different times of the year and I have to say...we have NEVER had a problem with bugs. Sometimes at night I have been woken up with the sound of some sort of vehicle and it sounds like spraying sound to me. Not a bad idea to bring something just in case though!

RE: Fort Wilderness next week

Have you stayed there before? If not, did you know that cart rental is about $50 per day; about the sams as the site. Also, campers can go the the lodges outside the campground for meals. Take the shuttle. One of the best food deals in the campground is the cheese pizza takeout from the restaurant next to the Hoop Dee Do Review (can't think of the name of it right now). You have to go there to order but it only takes about 15 minutes. The restaurant is Trails End...the buffet there is really good as well. Typical Disney!

RE: Carlsbad, NM

We stayed at the KOA last year for a few nights...typical KOA sites and VERY clean. Would stay there again.

RE: Summer Vacation, Tahoe/California Coast

I just read someone's comment about the Avenue of Giants...I too think you won't be that far north. That is by Eureka if I am not mistaken. We stayed at the Petaluma KOA which was very nice and we took a nice long day trip north of the city to Armstrong Redwood Park (I don't know if that is the exact name) and found it incredible. On the same day trip you can travel through a bit of wine country and other farms where they have various little markets where you can buy fresh produce. On the way back to Petaluma you will run along the ocean and there are lots of beaches to stop at. We took the tour from the Petalumn KOA of San Fran...it was well worth it (maybe a little pricey). At least we didn't have to park and try to navigate a city we didn't know. We stayed at the KOA in San Diego...it was a typical KOA so pretty decent. The one place we loved but paid a fortune for was Malibou RV Resort. We sat up on a cliff facing the ocean and could watch the dolphins every day. It was a 15 minute drive to Santa Monica which we loved! You can bike or walk along the ocean, go to Venice Beach (which was very cool!) or just relax in the sand. That was the best part of our trip.

RE: Summer Vacation, Tahoe/California Coast

We drove the #1 with almost exactly the same set up as you last year. We went from Santa Cruz all the way to San Diego. You won't have any problems...just take it slow and easy. The only unfortunate thing is that as the driver you will miss most of the sites as the highway can be very twisty. That was one of the most amazing trips we have ever taken...I can't wait to get back! One thing to watch- there is about a 90 mile stretch south of Big Sur where there is absolutely nothing in the way of gas. Fill up before you get to Big Sur as they are the last stop and they know it. I was forced to fill up for $4.50/gallon last year! I would hate to see what it is now.
